Additional I Am Sam - Music From and Inspired By the Motion Picture Information

Jessie Nelson's poignant tale of a mentally challenged man named Sam (Sean Penn) who recruits a lawyer to help him regain custody of his young daughter leans heavily on the lead character's obsession with Beatles songs, and his innocent trust in their wisdom and emotional truth. It's an artistic gambit that shrewdly lends itself to this mostly rewarding collection of Beatles covers by a wide range of contemporary artists, many of whom no doubt leapt at the chance to record a treasured song by their own musical heroes. The renditions are by and large faithful, and inform the elemental genius of the originals by the strength and variety of the artist's voices alone. The husband-wife team of Aimee Mann and Michael Penn (Sean's brother) can't help but find resonance in "Two of Us," just as Nick Cave's latter-day, heart-on-his-sleeve crooner infatuation makes "Let It Be" all his own. It's the reinterpretations that are riskier. While Paul Westerberg's stripped-down, nasal reading of "Nowhere Man" perceptively underscores Lennon's inherent Dylan fetish and Howie Day turns "Help!" from anxious plea to desperate dirge, Grandaddy smugly alt-rocks the energy right out of "Revolution." The Beatles hardly need anyone to burnish their reputation, but this album goes a long way toward underscoring their most undersung legacy as rock's most transcendent melting pot. -Jerry McCulley

What Customers Say About I Am Sam - Music From and Inspired By the Motion Picture:

I was skeptical of this soundtrack because most people don't do very well with remaking songs, especially songs of great artsits such as the beatles. I've not seen the movie yet but I LOVE the soundtrack.

It can be difficult to do a cover of a song, especially when the originals are done so well and become so ingrained, such as trying to cover songs by the Beatles. I picked up this CD due to hearing Eddie Vedder's track, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away, which turns out to be one of the best tracks, and probably in fact the best, on the CD.He is able to bring a good version of the song to life. Other tracks are pretty good, Golden Slumbers, Across the Universe for instance, which do not add to the originals or truly give them a fresh outlook while others fall short to me in the interpretation and performance. So the record is a bit uneven, yet overall is worth it for some of the songs that are well done, and some of the tracks I did not like originally have grown on me on additional listen. Perhpas my initial reaction was a bit off on some of these.

This is an incredible collection of Beatle covers. There are some great performance on here.Sarah is great.Ben Harper is amazing.Eddie Vedder is awesome as well.

I Am Sam - Music From and Inspired By the Motion PictureMy CD was in excellent condition, still wrapped.

Sean Penn wanted the orig Beatles tunes.they wouldn't give him the rights, so he used other artists' versions.I wrote this comment to address those who commented that Penn should have used orig Beatles music. I personally think the renditions of the classic Beatles tunes are great.
